I have made it pretty clear that as soon as my tank is cycled I am going to get some piranha. I had planned on getting around 5 and was going to buy the small (redbellied) ones, maybe spend $8-$10 apiece for them at like quarter or half dollar size. Thought it would be cool to raise them from "pups". Of course this way there is always the chance that some dont survive.

Yesterday I contacted a guy on craigslist with 4 5-6 inch piranha for sale. We havent agreed on a price yet but what do you think. Get the older ones (he had for 2 years) or go with the youngins. How much would be a good deal for 4 at that size.

thanks.........rick

i would get the little guys, that way you can guarantee that your fish will have been cared for properly their entire lives. if you buy them at quarter size, they should be the same size as the ones on craigslist within the first year. it is also alot more fun raising them from the start...

if you really want to go with the ones on craigslist, i would expect to pay about $20 apiece at an lfs for 6 inch natts, but i'd maybe pay $50 total from a private seller.

you can go ahead and get the small ones. they tend to be less skittish in the tank if they have grown out to adult sizes there. but if you go and get the larger ones you wont hafta wait for them to grow.. just make sure they are in good condition and everything should work out.. as for me i go with solo serras so i cant really give you an answer. oh and 100 would be a good deal on 4 at 5 inches. of course the cheaper the better!

I think he is expecting about $100. He has grown them in 60gal tank. He says that they are healthy. Funny thing though, he says he only feeds them once a week.:irked:

if they are only 5-6 inches and he has had them for two years, i would look elsewhere.

I think I have to agree.

lol ive had mine for 2 months and they are 3-4 inches already... they grow like weeds when the water is taken care of and you give them plenty of food

2 years and only 5-6 inces thats way too slow of a growth rate, i would tell you to get the baby ones but i think you should start off with more than 5 at that size because some might get eaten. good luck and keep us posted

As long as he keeps them well fed they should be fine...

Definately go with the juveniles...like previously stated 2 years and they're still only 5-6 inches?? Theres something seriously wrong there mate...

Plus if you do pleanty of water changes...keep the water levels as they should be and have them on a healthy balance diet...they will hit 5-6 inches in absolutely no time

Definately go with the juveys :)
