I am planning a build that will probably be a year before I put a fish in. It's not so much the money as the learning. Also, I threw a wrench in my own plans with my tape measure. I'd like opinions on my two possible plans.
Original:
Put large (3-400 gallon) in livingroom. Drawing attached. It would be where the farthest couch from the corner fireplace is (should be left side). If I put it behind the couch, that makes the layout...not great. If I put the couch on the opposite wall, it partially blocks some large windows. I was going to put the sump in the basement below and bring up a drip system. It would be nice to be in a main area, but a lot more work. It would be near a load bearing wall, and I was going to add another header for safety. It's a LOT more work.
New possible:
Put new tank in basement, same spot of house. It would be on the other side of the wall from all utilities. Basement is not finished, but I am adding a sauna that would have a great view of the tank. If I do this, I will also have a TV area where I could also see the tank. It won't be "finished"...more of a man cave area I guess. This seriously opens tank options up. I was even considering a build if I do this. I'd have glass for one side, and the front. I also don't have to deal with the sump being a floor below. The cost of the "finishing" I would do likely are less than the modifications to do my original option. I was looking at header, plumbing, drain in the floor, etc.
Third, less attractive option:
Say screw the monster...get a 125 or so and put it next to the couch instead of behind like the original scenario.
I do like the idea of a showcase in my livingroom. But, I honestly do this for me, not to impress others. My 55 in my office (other side of the wall from proposed LR tank) is already impressive to the average person. I am leaning towards the basement. Thinking that 30 minutes in the sauna with a view of the tank is way better than having the tank near when I am watching TV in the livingoom. As said, I will also set up a TV area in the basement for when I want to watch TV...and fish.

First thread, and long term plan
To make this easy for the tl;dr crowd, I will do sections. Background, current, plan, questions/ideas. I will try not to get too wordy, but feel free to ask anything. The plan is the part I need opinions on, and have questions. I am more concerned with doing this right than I am doing it...
