Medway Me.
I got a 40 gal. hex from my neighbor $10! anyway I want to put a frog in it and I have been doing tons of research. I have narrowed it down to a red eyed tree frog or a group of poison dart frogs. (my two favorites) I just want some oppinions, anyone ever had either of these frogs? Thanks

Darts are super fragile (but hardy) but require lots of floor space for territory. And those dart setups can be pretty expensive and a pain to set up. If youve had frogs before, go with darts. If this is your first frog, a pair of red eyes would be a great start. Is your tank vertical or horizontal. Its not like they think theyre 100 feet up in a tree or anything, it just helps situate plants, etc.

Check out saurian.net, blackjungle.com, and sweetarrowreptiles.com if you still want darts. Sandfiredragonranch.com can hook you up with some sweet CB red eyes and there are several red eye morphs availiable on the kingsnake.com classifieds, such as albino, xanthic, and melanistic.

Have fun whatever you choose!

I would steer away from both species if this will be your first amphibian. Instead go with something more hardy. Both of the species mentioned look great, but they are not for novice keepers. Most red eyes are imported and if they are cb they are the size of peas when sold. And then on the dart side they need alot of care and attention. If youre not a novice then ignore what I said and take the plunge as both species are fairly rewarding.

:iagree: Why don't you try a pair of White's Tree Frogs instead. They're hardy and a good choice for a beginner. So are Green and Cuban Tree frogs.

Nothing wrong with a CB juvie red eye. No one said it had to be imported or a baby. In fact I even gave him a breeder and recommendation. A white's would be great also.

Anyway, we don't know how experienced the guy is. If hes a novice, a red eye really isn't that much harder than a whites.

You sure did congrats to you, but I said most and I didnt back it by giving breeders that do or dont ... observation vs concrete..... again if youd like for me to repeat what I said since you did not read it attentively the first time, I stated that MOST (being the keyword) are imported and (MOST) again key word ; sold in the pet trade are pea size and MOST cb are in fact ch from gravid females that come in from the wild. There are SOME breeders that take the time to actually care for and breed them good examples you gave. But the fact of the matter is MOST are not well intended in the reptile/amphibian trade.... thats a whole other conversation I wont get into .... importation and exploitation vs captive propagation.

Just because MOST are (I fully agree with you) doesnt mean he cant find the SOME that do. Its not that hard to do a google search or look at kingsnake and find one. A CB frog is better for all involved, and its really not that hard to get one. A WC frog shouldnt be difficult anyway, red eyes are very hardy.

not my first frog, I've had white tree frogs and a goliath frog before. This will be my first exotic frog. the tank is a hex, so it's tall not wide. (thats why I want frogs not a fish) I am leaning twards the red eye, its less expensive.

Also I have a fogger I'm not using, and trying to find a use. Could I use that in the red eyes water? should help humidity and it looks nice

Anythng outside your native country is exotic. That means every frog mentioned in this thread is exotic besides the american green tree frog, and cubans are introduced into florida. Anyway...

Foggers work great, just dont go overboard with it. :) I would go with a red eye over darts anyday (well if I was paying for it! lol). You can do any type of viv, from stark to dartfrog-like and anywhere in between. And a lot less expensive if something goes wrong!
