If you were building your end-all ray tank, how big would you go?
Mine would be something big enough to keep a solid group of BDs and an asian aro, but small enough that maintenance is still pretty quick and easy (definitely no diving in the tank or anything like that). I really like in-wall tanks on a corner so you can see into the front and the side.
If I ever get around to building a ray tank - I'm thinking it will be 10 feet long, 6 feet wide, and around 3.5 feet high, made from a fiberglass shell with a 8-10' and a 6' viewing window.
I wouldn't go over 10 feet, because while it's impressive, it's very cost-prohibitive to get a window any bigger than 10 feet. If I found a good deal on a 12'+ window that'd be another story but you wouldn't catch me holding out for it.
The 6 foot width would let you grow rays BIG, and in a 10x6 I'd be comfortable with a solid group of 4-6 full grown BDs.
3.5 feet high gives you a 4-6" lip on the top and bottom with a 36" high window. Tall enough to still be impressive for a display, short enough to be able to maintain, and short enough to still use 1" acrylic or 3/4" (or maybe even thinner) glass. Total volume around 1600 gallons at 10 feet.
What would you do? And on a side note, anyone got a tank around 8-10x6x3-4' that I could see?
