So about 2-3 weeks ago we had an issue in my grow out tank in which my convicts as they do popped baby's and bullyed my young dovii (1.5-2") they killed one over night and that left me with 3 the two pos males which are slightly larger then took up residents at each end of the tank and took to hiding in nice places. The third one slightly smaller took a beating not to bad but enough for me to be concerned and moved him back to my wife community tank ( where they were when they first arrived at 3cm).

So he been in there about 2-3 weeks and is all healed up and is perfectly healthy but as he is a bit smaller I'm keeping him there for now. His growth has picked up although he dosnt eat like the other two and never looks overly interested in food even though I mix there diet.

The question is he just dosnt live up to a dovii. As the largest fish in there surly I should be missing Guppy's and barbs by now?? Instead he just quite content to play fish buddies with them. The other two are now standing up to the convicts and other fish in the grow out. Should I be concerned about him?? Water all good he and the BGK (3") are the biggest fish and they all seem happy ( I'm well aware its a game of when lol)

I hope to have the 180g set up soon and I'll be putting all 3 in there with hope of a pair or I'll try and track a female down but for now I just don't think he is man enough to go in the grow out.

Any thoughts??

get some better pics looks like a jag? also is it blind in the eye we can see... ? beter pics. many young dovii dont get their attitude till around 12 inch. is that figure of 8 puffers in there too?

I haven't noticed anything wrong with its eyes but if that's the case it would explain it. I'll try for better pictures.

Yeah there is two figure 8 in there the plan was to slowly remove the live bearers out and the BGK into another tank and then slowly turn this brackish (as per online research) they seem to be doing well in there but its wife tank and its like knocking on wood trying to explain this all to her I just do it all when she not looking lol hence there being a dovii in there :D.

I'll be a bit upset if they turn out to be jags lol I brought them online cause on shops in Wales will even order them in. I know wharf had some in but with fuel and a 360mile round trip it made it cheaper to order online. That said there is a 7" female at one of the local maidenheads but its in a display and they reluctant to sell. If they are jags then I'll make the trip ( its more the cost of what I'll spend there rather than the fuel lol)

So what's the tell tell for these being jags. I have kept both jags and dovii before all looked similar until bigger, and all were bigger than 2" when brought.

Young dovii look markedly different at that size, the pattern is a dead give away

grow on tank 2 so hard to get this guy, he sits up by the filter hiding in some floating plants and then ambushes every thing that swims under him except the birches. this one has a lot of blue on the fins even at this small size .

so today i had a good chat with the bloke i brought them off. i have sent him pictures and he has sent me some from the breeder and they look the same as the fry from his Dovii, this isnt to say he has sent the right pictures lol. he said they are "yellow dovii" so im taking it he means costa rican. So dose this mean anything well not really, and the supplier agrees so he has ordered some jags from the same supplier (as advertised on the price list) the plan is to grow these out with some of the same batch of dovii's as mine and see for him self and he will provide me with pics and we will see. so i cant say fairer than that.

in the mean time im not going to make any hasty moves with these and continue to grow them out, get my 180G set up and take it from there. aquaman45 has some in stock, also a breeding pair so may go and get a pair from him. either way i will have my dovii pair lol.

thanks again for all the input, i no this isnt the first time this has happened but last time it happened to me i went for jag and notices a few different ones in the tank they came home and turned out to be Dovii so maybe its karma hahaha
