colorado!
ive been a freshy owner for a while now, owned a 55 gallon first, then got rid of it, and have had a 135 and a 30 gal for a while now...

my first ideas were to convert the 135 to salt (had a florida gar in their for a little)

then i started to gather all my things needed for a salt tank.

and i stumbled across some pond / plywood builds and grow out tanks, and i started to mess around with my dad, telling him about them etc

long story short, i got The OK to do a basement pond/pool/monster tank....

first thing that popped into my head was HUGE SALTWATER! and sharks groupers etc....

but then i found skimming a pond that big,and buying the inhabitants was just too expensive for what i was looking at doing.

so ive been debating

Freshwater 600+ gallon plywood build/ pond

or try for salt in the big pond

or keep the 135 loose the idea of the pond and go salt in that....

or somthing im not thinking of that you guys might segjest?

if you need anymore info im all over it, i check the site pretty frequently

thanks guys! sorry if this is a redundent thread

oh and the room the "pond" would go in, would allow for a 7foot length a 5 foot depth, and a 3 foot height

I think the pond idea is great! I have seen this idea elswhere on another site. It also was built out of plywood and had "windows" on the side for added viewing. I think he was going to keep rays in there as well. I'll try and find the site and the thread for you.

What type of fish do you want?

the tank doesn't really matter if you don't like your fish. Not sure how old you are.. but remember you'll eventually have to move it or break it down and large fish tend to be harder to re-home. And my thoughts would be why put that much time and money into something I may only have for a year or 2? Food for thought there.

^^ great call, im turning 21 in april,

i really enjoy your comment, i think it helped to bring me to the real facts here, as did a lot of things along the way of planning all this, i geuss i was so easily absorbed by the fact of being able to have a 600 plus gallon tank, but when i sit and think all the man hours etc just to get a bigger tank, and along with what you said about the fish, i know if i had that big of a tank, i would not be happy unless i had groupers and sharks, and there is no way that is happening.

im kindof un certain as to what fish i want,

if i kept the 135 and went marine i would want a cat shark and a grouper etc

and im unsure if a 18" depth is enough for thoose suckers (mabey not for life, but i know a few years and i would be ok with that.)

double post sorry

If you really want a cat shark or grouper. I'm not overly knowledgeable but know a few basics. You can "suck it up" and wait until your in a position to have these fish long-term. Or look into a rubber maid tub that would be fairly easy to transport. they make a 300 round one that would probablly suit the shark for awhile at least. They are alot cheaper then tanks and make decent indoor ponds. Guess it really boils down to where your headed when you move out. I would put a 220 or larger in my appartment if I knew the flooring could take it ( which it can't )

life stinks sometimes but  for being responsible and weighing in reality. No matter what you decide, Get Fish you are interested in. I use the excuse of needing something for a tank just to go check out any LFS just to see what they might have.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

to the top

Well, if you're planning on moving out eventually, I wouldn't make something you can't fit out the door. Do 7x5x2 and you probably carry it out when you move (most door being 30" wide).
