i have a 55g planted and I have been having trouble with algae for a few months but the tank has been going for a few years. I have a power compact 130watt set up on it now. Is this a good plant growing light for a 55g? And would switching to a better one help the plants grow to out compete the algae.

I used that same 130-watt fixture over a 55, and many low to moderate light plants did just fine. However if you upgraded to the 260 watt, you'd be able to grow more moderate to higher light plants.

To reduce algae growth, try cutting back on the amount of time the light is on. I usually leave mine on for no more than 7 hours.

What's the kelvin rating on your bulb? it should be fine. what are you doing for co2 and ferts? algae is caused by an imbalance between light/co2/ferts. if you add more light, its only gonna get worse until you figure out whats out of balance.

if youre not going to change what youre doing with co2/ferts, then youll want less light, not more

The bulbs are new now and they get changed every 8-10 months regularly. They are 6700k. I definetly have a problem with my tank. I have been using the same flourish fert for ever and in the last few months my problems have started. The tank has been going for years and nothing has changed except that the amazon's have sprouted a few babies and i replanted them. And i have added different fish here and got rid of one there.-------------------i am just bummed about all the trouble with this tank. It was a nice soothing to look at tank and now it is a eye sore.-------Thanks for the help i am now going to go the test and fert method and see what happens.

the regular Flourish is nothing but a trace supplement. youre lacking your N-P-K nutrients. you can do this with all of Seachem's line, but it will get very expensive. your better off using dry bulk fertilizers

Have you tried weekly water changes?
