The max size of the specie should be the one to consider, not its current size.

Endli's grow to about 2.5 feet, but in the aquarium you would probably just get about 2 feet, max size is seldom achieved in captivity.

i would suggest 2 feet wide will do, its just enough to conveniently turn around for your bichir.
