I'm getting angelfish, corycats, a bristlenose pleco, gouramis and some other stuff based on what I can find :O

Is black a nice color? :screwy:

Edit:How many lbs of gravel should I have for a 55g?

Black brings out the color of your fish the best. I can't find black sand where I live so I had to go with a light tan. If you can't find black sand then you could use a black gravel.

Are you going to be planting? If not 50lbs should be fine. For those fish I'd probably go with something natural, like a smallish grade brown gravel or natural sand, but black would be good also.

I like the natural sand color. with plants and drift wood.

I'm ordering the gravel online from Petco. I needed a piece of driftwood and they have a sale and free shipping on orders $50+, so I was thinking of keeping gravel and driftwood and returning the rest to a Petco store. I don't think they have sand D:

Edit: I want to buy http://www.petco.com/product/107318/PETCO-Black-Aquarium-Gravel.aspx

I'll probably mix a few low light live plants with plastic ones :O

Blacks not a bad color, but I admit that my tank looks too dark. I have a black background and black sand and I feel that some of the fish I've had in the past in there seems to darken which made them a bit hard to see. I like natural. You can get natural colored pool filter sand from pool supply stores or sand from Home Depot. They just need to be heavily cleaned, but they are a lot cheaper than sand you would buy at pet stores.

For poundage it depends on your liking. I use around 3/4 of a pound per gallon in my fish tank becuase it is easier to clean. It also depends on what size of a base you want. If you went 65 pounds in a standard 55 i am pretty sure you will have close to a 3 inch base. To some people the bigger base looks better and to somepeople it doesnt. If i were you, i would start with 40ish pouonds and then you can always add from there

I forgot to mention...the usual guide is one pound/gallon. So 50lbs would work. And again...if you were to go with sand, at pet stores, the price is usually $25/25lbs. Pool Filter Sand at pool supply stores goes is about $25/50lbs. Gravel is cheaper at the pet stores compared to their sand and I believe it's $15/25lbs, I think

Lol I decided to get two small pink convicts instead...there were some nice sized ones but they were 7 bucks each :(

Would the gravel color change for different types of fish?
