whats all this hype about zebra pleco?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
becuase they have striking colouration.

Not only is it the color factor, but also that they are relatively small, and somewhat easy to breed (compared to many others). The price is due to a lack of availability (no longer legal to export out of Brazil), a high demand, and the recognition by breeders that they are not available but are in high demand.

arent they a generally easy fish to keep as long as water parameters and tempertaure are stable? they are quite a fair bit but they would look great in a south american biotope with discus some bogwood dense vegetation and a few tetras etc... and maybe a few more plecs.

Zebras are comfortable in much warmer water than most other plecos. My set were kept at 88dF. They will do ok with discus, but not a recommended idea. They do not eat vegetation, and need meat, not bogwood.

It is quite rare to find true zebras in LFS. Even Aquarium solutions doesn't have them in stock, and the owner is a big zebra plec breeder.
