Whats an inline pump?

Theres a pump on craigslist for a decent price but it says its an inline pump and is non submersible, hows a pump work if you cant submerse it? help me out guys its the 770gph little giant mdq
 
It means the pump sits out of the water... and a hose plugs into the inlet, and a second hose plugs into the outlet...
 
oh so it sucks up the water through the pipe and also expels it, does that effect flow, i hear pumps are meant to push water more so than take in water, or are these pumps made to be able to take in water better. This probably wouldnt be as good for an ohf filter, but would probably be better for the canister type.
