Hey guys/gals, i have a Scomb and i was just wondering what kinda habitual conditions they like. I havent really found any info on them like water conditions, tankmates, ect. I know some of you had to have or currently own one of these so any hints or tips will help! I havent seen mine eat in almost a month now. I have him in a 40g with a few smaller fish that dont seem to bother him. He looks healthy tho... Please help.

Thanks,

Kory

From the research ive done before i bought my paraya ,the scombe is the most fragile they must have fast moving water with pristine water conditions , and hard to get off live . ive also read that they up and die for no reason around 12" but that doesnt mean yours will. very interesting fish to watch eat ... they wait for the prey to come to them and strike really fast awesome fish . good luck :headbang2

NON Aggressive tankmates. Anything that will outcompete them will stress them. Very easily stressed. Best to have the tank in a low traffic part of the home where they won't be bothered. I always kept my tank between 82-85 degrees and plenty of salt on hand. Low light. Bulk them up with QTd rosies then try to get them on freeze dried krill. Put krill in filter output to simulate live food. I would keep in a small group rather than a single specimen. Tank size I would say 75 is best to start with.... But I did start mine in a 55.

Anything I missed just ask.

The first one I had grew twice as fast as the last 2 I had. The first one was kept in light brackish water. The 1st made it to almost 8 inches before being gutted by a moray. The last 2 died a little over 6 inches...I believe they just gave up in my Payara community. I blame the Tats or the sudden death Scomb syndrome.

Like mentioned just search. "Payara" ,"Hydrolycus Scombroides"
I listed all the successfull/unsuccessfull tank mate combos I had in a Tat thread.

Good luck!! I hate to say it but you'll need it. After the Scombs try some Tats..... Much hardier although slow growing..... Or take it to the next level with Armatus...But everything is elevated...Price, tank size, aggression. Very rarely seen for sale though.

well my friend, if you want to be succefull with yourr new hydro. then you will need the following:

55G minimum as for they like room try to get them at a med size. and of same spices. as for diffrent spices may attack others.

try to go for a shoal for 4or more Reccommended for your Payaras health but 1-2 is okay.

as you may already know payara need heavy water flow alot of air and places to rest. Rocks big rocks/bog wood/Driftwood is good not neccisarly plants because they are usually in fast flow enviornments such as under a waterfall in white water and such no really steady easing water like the other south american specimens.

Many people have told me that there payara has suddenly died even though there was no sighn of disease/ stress.. 90% of the time is that you boil your fish alive. this occures when you change them tem of your water to over 85(to prevent a disease etc.). This is fatal to most of the payara species. also it will help alot to have R.O water. as for that is there True water conditions. Stay away from raw tap asmuch as pos-sib-le as for your tap ph may be to high for them reccomended ph is anywere from 6.8-7.0 make sure your ammonia free. keep your temp at 79-82. always try to have more filteration then neccisary.

Try to have less tempered fish in your tank.

Feed them live fish QTD guppy/goldfish/rossy's if they eat pellets that great feed emm that or anything else but normaly i dont think they eat anything else.

follow those tips and your fish wont die.

and btw here is the diffrence in payara the one to the left is a Scomb. much shinier then other hydro's.

as for this one is a hydro armatus the true payra.

you can also tell diffrence by teeth structure. scombs in generall have 2 long pointy cainine teeth and followed by smaller cainine teeth while armatus has med size and more cainine teeth.
