I am considering looking into getting a canister filter:confused: But I am unsure where to start or even if canister filters are good, are they cheaper in the long run? Can some one please help

Well what size tank do you have? The tank size would really help for us to recommend a type of filtration for you.

:iagree: thats the first part. canisters can be pricey depending on your needs and by brands. i have no experience with them, but eheim's are probably top of the list and so are the prices. i have an fx5 and love it. its just what you need and would like to have for your friends.

If you are just looking for a namebrand, IMO you can't go wrong with either an Eheim or a Fluval...

Eheim seems to be the best brand, but if you have a smaller tank you could easily get away with a HOB(hang on back filter) and if you have a larger tank a sump/wet dry would be better, so we really need to know your tank size to tell you what is better for your tank.

Since this is going to be your first canister, and chances are you won't be getting an eheim; I'm not going to repeat "eheims are best". For the logical choice, I would go with the Rena Filstar line. Reasonably priced, good flowrate, nice media capacity, extremely easy to clean and operate.

A lot of people like Fluval FX5s, but I personally don't think they're all that they are cracked up to be (HERACY!!).

I was in the same situation at one time. I wanted to get a canister filter or a sump but when I looked into the sumps I had one big question...what happens if the power goes out?......how do you stop the flow of water going into the sump? I didnt feel like dealing with that issue and I couldnt afford an Eheim so I bought the XP3 to go along with my emp. 400. So far so good!

The flow from the tank stops automatically unless you set up the return in such a manner that it back-siphons water into the sump. If the return nozzle is only slightly submerged, back-siphoning will stop as soon as the water level drops below it (normally resulting in just a couple of gallons of water added to the sump).

Thanks for that info. I'm gonna have to keep that in mind because if I EVER! get enough money I would like to move up to a 180g and get some hands on experience with the wet/dry type filtration.
