Whats up with society? Like seriously....

Today when I went to the the grocery store with my girlfriend I saw this women who was homeless for quite some times now. She was cradling a small dog in her arms and held a sign saying that she needs food for her dog and herself by the entrance. I felt bad for the lady so I bought her a bag of dog food and got $20 cash back so I can give it to her. After we checked out, we walked to the lady and gave her the bag of dog food and the $20. A middle age woman came up to the homeless lady and I, and started saying things that humiliate her in front of a small crowd people. I cannot say much on what the lady said because it was inappropriate. After the ordeal the homeless lady got up and left with tears in her eyes.

I know that these people did this to themselves or something unfortunate happen, but I feel we should treat them like human beings.

I work in the eye of the public so I feel its my duty to help others when needed or else I will feel guilty later knowing I did not help that person with their situation.

wow thats messed up.

I've worked at Homeless shelters many times, and they are Human Beings just like us. Just because their dirty doesnt mean their not just like us inside. Just because they've made some bad choices in life to be put in this situation, doesn't mean their bad people. We're all equal, but some people are just too insensitive to realize this. Last year I was hanging out with some of my friends downtown and some dude walked by us and said go up to the person around the corner and put your hands in a gun shape and go BANG BANG. We were kinda confused but were gonna do it. When we turned around the corner, it was a homeless man in a wheelchair dressed in his old army gear. Probably fought in nam and the action we were told to do probably brought back old memories and made him freak out. we obviously didn't do it, I mean WTF, how effed up is that. Just cause he's homeless doesn't mean we can mess with him like that :irked:

Someone should have told the woman to either help out or shut up and move on.

i used to think it was dumb for homeless people to own a pet. but then i guess if you have no one, the stray you became friends with is all you got

you did a good thing studd. i've given a dollar here and there, but never 20 bucks. i will also offer food. if they take it, you know they really are hungry. if they refuse, it's because they need money for their next fix.

people wanna see the big city life and all that, but it can be a really depressing place. I remember when i visit my bro in Philadelphia, man, it humbles you to see bums like that on those streets. That song, Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springstein, never truly felt that song until after walking the streets of philadelphia

Given the type of pan handlers I have to deal with in Boston I'd have given her a 20 for not being aggressive. I do my best to give when I see people like that. The reason they are where they are is that most homeless shelters won't allow pets. The no-kill shelters are all beyond capacity right now as are the other ones. She's suffering just to keep her little dog safe. Something I'd do as well.

Now there are many pan handlers in cities (Boston I know personally) that are not homeless, have government housing and pan handle to raise tax free income while keeping government benefits. Given the homeless women reaction this is not the case here. I'd have asked her if she needed anything else, and glared disgustedly at the old house frau (the one yelling). Maybe spit at the floor in front of her depending on how cranky I was that day.

Funny how some of us are quick to judge till we're up the creek ourselves. There are plenty of homeless there by repeated bad choices however there are many who either made one seemingly mild bad decision that snowballed real fast or just unlucky.

You did the right thing, see it for what it is and move on. Not much you can do about lowlifes like that.

The dog is the only thing she has. I always see her alone.

i feel for most people who are in that situation, but i worry about just handing money someone in that situation. once i offered a guy a big mac fries and a drink just bought it. He screamed at me and said that i was a mean evil person for not giving him cash. another time after that first one i gave a guy a five, 2 hours later i was at liquor store buying a sixer and the guy walked in and bought a pint, and went back to his corner, another "wtf" moment, Now i only help indirectly, like giving to the shelters.

Oh almost forgot... this happened last week i was down in MD silver spring, bethesda, rockville and there are alot of homeless people. i was in a salon waiting for my girlfriend getting her hair done, and i was talking to the girl at the front desk and i made a comment about how unfortunate the guy one the corner was. we could see him from the window. the girl laughed and said the guy wasn't homeless. i was confused, until i saw him walk into a parking lot and hop into a newer toyota and drive off. Those are the type of people ruining the world.

^ yea dude, i agree on giving food. some only wait for cash so they can go buy a beer or feed a drug problem

The only charity's i give to is the childrens hospital, see and eye dogs, ill buy a pen for cancer day and ill give money and buy a poppy for anzac day (veterans day) and even gave to the red cross dissaster apeal(Japan) i care about worthy causes and people and am compasionate to a point but also realistic. Giving to these street people is pointless and i make a point to cross the road to avoid them. ( but i would never go out of my way to verbaly abuse them)

people who know me know ive always been a big hearted person but i have my limits, i give to things i beleive in and people who really need it. not street people who will just spend it on crack and booze and do nothing to help themselves.

Just my 2 c.
