well for the past year and a half ive kept fish with nothing but luck and have never lost a fish- even kept a stingray for 6 months before i sold it, but recently im seeming to have tons of trouble with my community tank.

About 6 months ago i got a 125 that i kept an oscar in by himself and recently fillet him for arowana food. So i got a ton of community fish (angels, neons , tetras, clown loaches) and now all of them seem to be dying. Community fish are supposed to be incredible hearty but i cant keep them alive for more than 2 weeks. I havent done any water test because it CANT be the water, ive kept ALL fish alive in this water for almost 2 years now. The water is at a stable 82 degrees and there is 2 hang on filters with an aerator and tons of water movement.

its stocked with 20 small fish (danios , tetras , etc ) and 2 small angelfish.

you chopped up your oscar to feed to your arowana..??

- how many times you change the water (pls dont say 2 years)
- how much do you change
- do you clean the filter or just siphon water
- blah

you should be doing water parameter checks regardless if you've kept fish 2 years alive or not. it does not eliminate the possibility of having bad water over time.

oscar is a larger fish and will pollute the tank more. plus arowana foods if you're overfeeding. plus the 'ton of fish' that may be spiking the nitrate/ammonia. or maybe the oscar is just eating those community fish.

The fish gods are punishing you for filleting the oscar...duh.

yes , no one wanted the oscar so he made a tasty treat for my arowana. And yes i do water changes, about 30 percent every 2 weeks. I havent recently cleaned the filter but i dont do it on any of my other tanks and they are fine (2 x 125 -3x 55- 35 -10)

the fish gods are definitely angry.

you haven't cleaned the filter in 2 years? rinse the filter pads out, sometimes they get clogged. dont use hot water or you'll kill the bb. test your water it takes 10 seconds.

WOW if you do things like that don't share it on a forum its not p.c i am not a fan of oscars but you will draw heat from oscar lovers.

im an oscar lover myself, but its ok...you do what you have to do and thats better than just freezing it and throwing it in the trash or the backyard.

It sounds to me like your filter wasnt ready for the new fish load. If it was a small oscar its bioload was not equal two twenty fish so you might be getting some big ammonia spikes which are killing your fish. do lots of water changes and get a dang test kit

The most likely cause is that you added too many fish at once and this caused ammonia and nitrites to shoot up.

1 - Rinse that filter media out
2 - Get a water testing kit
3 - Change 50% of the water every 24-48 hrs until ammonia and nitrite are zero.
4 - Add a tablespoon of aquarium salt per every 5 gallon to promote good health.

Remember to treat your tap water with a product that neutralizes chlorine, chlorimides and other nasties found in tap water.
Follow this advice and things should pan out OK.
Oh and by the way just hope the bad Karma that you have clocked up doesn't bring you back as an Oscar.
