Can anyone ID this and tell me if it's harmful or not? I don't know if you can tell by the pics but its purple. I tried searching for it on google and also checking the books I have and can't find it anywhere. It started out as just a little branch coming out of my Live Rock and now it has been growing like crazy the past couple of months. It looks cool in the tank, so I wouldn't mind keeping it. I just have to trim it back every couple of weeks. Please help, I don't want to leave it in my tank if it can cause problems.. The last two pics are of me snowboarding in the Alps and the other is a spring view of the Italian Alps from my house.. Thanks for the help in advance.

That looks like the thing my bait shop uses for blood worm substrate.

I would think that it is only a type of algae much like what people put in their sumps, though don't quote me on that.

i would say it's definately a type of macroalgae, maybe a fauchea sp.? hard to tell what color it is, maybe post a picture of it in the water still....either way shouldn't cause any problems just may grow excessively but oughta help clean up nutrients, some fish will probably eat it

I think your right on it being fauchea sp, I looked it up and looks like it to me. I could be wrong but thats what it looks like.. From reading baout it, it's not harmful and is actually desired by many reefers. So as of now I will, keep it growing and just trim it when need be. Unless someone chimes in with a reason as to why I shouldn't keep it. Thanks for the help.

Not that I know anything, being a Newbie to all of this, but that actually looks very much like seaweed we have here in Australia.....

I've seen the same thing in beaches here.
