Hi, I have a shrimp, hia name is Jeffrey :) but im not sure what type of shrimp he is. I had him in Dec because his previous owner was going to flush him down the toilet as he was eating her fish. Anyway when I had him he was quite little, he has shed a few times and now hes quite big, around 8cm with claws/pincers.
I was told he was a Giant Freshwater Shrimp, Does anyone know what he actually is?
Another thing thats been worrying me is that lastnight he was his normal self and then I noticed he stopped moving? and his tail slightly curled, i assumed he was sleeping until this morning he was in the same position in the same place, i even tapped him and he didnt move. Automatically i assumed he died but someone told me that they 'hibernate' to produce eggs?
So ive left him and now hes started to turn an orangy pink colour?
is Jeffrey dead?
I would add some pics but im not sure how :S

i cant add a picture, but he was a grey/brownish colour with little orange spots down his back end. hes quite thick too, and not see through.

The only time I've seen a shrimp turn orangy pink is becaue their dead, I'm assuming it's because they kinda cook with the warm water...

Although without a picture, it's very difficult to determine..

oh... :S i hope hes not..
im clicking the insert image icon but nothings happening.
um the colour he is turning is the same colour as his spots.

Did you upload the image to Photobucket or some program like that first? If not, you should be able to 'attach' it.. the little paperclip will help you with that..

Well there could be many factors...

temp?
water perameters? shrimp are very sensative to an unstable environment..
chemicals?
molting?

I can't tell if he's dead or not, but if he is alive and maybe he is, turn the lights out so that it reduced the stress level some...

and check out some of the things above..

If you don't have a test kit, go get one, brand is API the liquid test kit.. the whole is around $30 bucks..

Do you know what kind of prawn it is?

Oh, and are there any other tank mates?

He's dead. Sorry bud

ill have to get one of those kits. he shed about 3 times in the few months ive had him. there are no others in with him as i was told he will eat them.
i met a lady who said he looks like a giant freshwater shrimp, and apparently they change into 3 different colours but i dont know?

if he is dead how do i get rid of him? and i think hes a bit big to flush down the toilet. Awwwh, im slightly gutted now :(
