Optimized-20161212_212557.jpg Optimized-20161212_212602.jpg I have tried plants in the past with little luck. Im convinced it was y crappy lighting. I now have a pair of Beamswork 10k's on my 180 gallon freshwater. I have a large piece of driftwood in the tank i would like to attach a some plants to. I have oscars, silver dollars and a rhino pleco in the tank. I want something hardy, looks cool and that won't grow out of control. Also open to other suggestions for other plants. I don't want to go overboard but i would love some live plants.. I'm going for a natural look. I have a drilled tank. Thanks for the suggestions!

personally i like to use java fern,, anything with a rhizome, crypts ect.

you could also do moss.. it would look cool with moss on the top and
java fern and crypts on the bottom

Java fern and anubias come to mind, both can be tied to driftwood with some fishing line or cotton, and should eventually take hold...

Only thing is it seems like your tank maybe leaning towards high light levels, which means you may see algae growth if you dont control your lights carefully?

Bolbitis? I have the African variety in my tank (crap light, no fert, no co2) and it "grows", so under proper light etc it should grow well. That being said I've only got my own (minimal) experience so if its a bad option someone jump in and correct me. :)

Agree with java fern and anubias.

Don't the silver dollars eat plants? That is why I have them off of my "eventual fish to have when I upgrade" list. LOL (I love the spotted ones.)

bolbitus is a great choice along with narrow leaf java fern and anubias. stick with the larger varieties of anubias llike bateri and congensis. anubias nana petitie and such will only be destroyed by fish.

My two big silver dollars don't eat live plants, they never have and because of this I didn't believe the stereotype...

For the first 5 years of their lives they lived with a large cichlid who was always digging and redecorating so they'd always had fake plants in their tank. When we lost Horrace (cichlid) we put some tetras in with the dollars and moved a few live plants in with them so the tetras had extra cover, I don't think the dollars knew they could eat the plants. :D

Here's an old pic of them in a tank with anubias, java fern, java moss and bolbitis, as well as some fake plants. Please excuse the horrible pic, and algae covered tank in the pic...

My two little ones however destroy plants. I put some anubias, duckweed and stricta in their qt tank and they ate pretty much all of it - the goldfish (who eat ANYTHING) won't eat the anubias, but those damn dollars will! Grrr! So before putting them in the main tank all the live plants came out. :(

Silver dollars most definitely will eat your plants. If you're really lucky you might get some like my big two, but don't your breath. :)

Anubias will attach, too, given enough time. My plants seemed to do better when I switched from 10,000K to 6700. It also seem to make colors pop a little more.
