Right now, I am running 2 Rena Filstar Fx3's on my 180g. Both have 30ppi pad in the bottom with filter floss in between, next tray up has bio chem stars and bioballs, and in the last, top tray, I have 20ppi pads with ammo-carb in between.

Best to have all the mech media before the bio to help keeping the bio media from getting gunked up. Also you should have the course 20ppi foam before the finer 30 ppi foam, followed by the floss last. You want to filter out the bigger particles first followed by the smaller particles in succession

I have 6 XP3s that all have been running 2 to 3 years with the following set up.

Bottom tray half filled with either Fluval prefilter or Eheim ehfimech, top that with 2 20ppi foam sponges. Second tray 2 30 ppi foam sponges with bio media filling the other half of the second tray. Third tray is full of biomedia.

For biomedia I use ehfisubstrat, bio max, matrix and bio glass. These filters are cleaned every 2 months.

Eheim has pre filter , blue sponge , tons of substrate pro, ehfisynth pad and thats it
Fluval I took apart today it has the sponges , pre filter , filter floss and two trays packed with bio rings from fluval

The water flows from Bottom to top...my coarse stuff is at the bottom with the exception of the filter floss. When you say "substrate", do you mean like a plant gravel??

Bottom to top

30PPM-->20PPM-->Ceramic Rings-->Ceramic Rings-->Micro Polisher

:duh: I have 6 of them I know they flow bottom to top. The 30ppi foam sponge is the finer of the two, according to your post you have the finer of the two sponges on the bottom:screwy:

I didn't say anything about "substrate", however the ehfisubstrat is a bio media made by eheim.

You too, or are you just confused as to which is actually the coarse foam sponge?

No, I go by looks, I just typed it in real quick and didn't think about it I guess. Course stuff is on the bottom. Nice catch.

In my fluval 404, the prefilter sponges, and biomedia. Thats it. In the magnum, filter floss and a filter cartridge. thats it. In the penguin hang on back canister, filter floss. I'm not a big believer in carbon or zeolite. I just do water changes.

Fluval 404 - all bio media; Fluval Prefilter media/Gravel, Bio Max/Bio Max, Bio Max/Substrat Pro, Substrat Pro/Substrat Pro.

eheim ecco- substrat pro, substrat pro, substrat pro, substrat pro
fx3- bottom sponge, substrat pro , substrat pro
2180 eheim- top-blue sponge, white prefilter, substrat pro, substrat pro, substrat pro
