whats inside a canister??

so i bought a used canister, and i dont know much about them ...
its a eheim 2217, and inside there is just 2 circluar grates, i assume to keep the parts that go inside seperated

anyhow, since i am new to canisters, i dont know how to set it up?

heres my guess, any help would be appreciated

i assume that i put a filter pad in the bottom, to catch all large debris
then some carbon packets above that?
then i was going to fill it the rest of the way with bioballs ?

how close am i?

you are pretty close .save the carbon until you need to remove meds or tannings , get a filter pad or to to catch the crap then fill the sucker up with a bio media of your choice . i would say pot scrubies over bio balls as they have more surface area .

anything that doesn't have an added chemicals or soap to them.

Don't waste space with carbon, fill it with sponge.

Why not just use the media Eheim suggests? I am using the Ehfimech in the bottom as my coarse media, then blue foam media, then EhfiSubstrat, then white fine pad. The only pad that needs regular replacement is the white fine pad.
