Hey guys and gals,

Recently within the past month, I noticed this whitish film of tiny spots my female leo, and more recently on my male BD...what I want to know is, should I be concerned that this is some kind of fungus...is it contagous...and can it eventually be harmful to them?

What I know is this:
My water is pretty much perfect, no amonia, or nitrites, my ph is at a constant 7.8ish, they rays seem very happy, and healthy and all eat very aggressively once a day fresh shrimp and ocasionally night crawlers.

So what is it? Can it be that my fine gravel is off white, and as a result they are lightening up-and thats what it looks like?

Thanks in advance!
John

my rays will get this when something is wrong.

ph swing
too much nitrate
too many water changes

i believe its a sign of stress

At the risk of "banging my nitrate drum" what levels of Nitrate seem to cause you a problem?

I had these same spots appear when chlorine was getting past my carbon filter, switched from a 25 micron filter (Home Depot) to a .6 micron filter (The Filter Guy's)....problem resolved!!

As Vamptrev mentioned above-could be one of several things or a combination.

Ditto this. Whenever my carbon is exhausted in my tapwater filter or they have added extra dose of chlorine for hot weather/high usage , my rays show these marks. As already said this usually dissapears after a good water change.

I change the water twice a week for a total of about 50% (25% each wc)
just checked my nitrate, and its at 0 (using an api kit) its yellow...

maybe too much of a water change? as vamp stated? maybe only do 40% a week?
what do you guys think I should do?

I want to say that I changed the water filter insert about 2 months ago...maybe its time to replace it already perhaps....
I added some stresscoat to the water last night as a "just in case" measure

... was about posting a tread -asking the same question.

I noticed that my female leo had these white/gray dots yesterday. She eats well, and i see no change in behavior. The male is not affected.

Ph is 7, rock stabile. Nitrate levels are usually at 12-25 mg/l. Have changed water today, 60 %, and will do the same tomorrow...
