I know Chaitika (sp?) uses the Nikon D300, and those pictures are GORGEOUS, but what's the best camera in everyone else's opinion? I might be able to convince my mom to buy me one, so I want to know what to get. =)

Also, what lenses and stuff should I use? Which are best for what situations?

I also remember someone posted a picture of an ant up close, it was a REALLY good picture. What are those magnifying lenses called?

hey.... well.... best lense, of course there r the ones that u think r the best, but theres always another level above that is better ( and more expensive) ... so if u mean best in a certain price range .... under a grand are d40 d80 ... not sure bout d90 .... over , u got all those other nikons to choose from... pretty much nikon dslr is the best brand : ) lense.... really depends on what u take pics of... and of course, it also depends on ur budget.... if u have a tight budget, just get one that has more range ... but if u get fancy, and has mega moolah , then u can play around with lenses , like u said, those ants pics were taken with a macro lense

The right question is what's the best camera your mom can afford!

True that. You can't convince her to get you a D300 lol

you're gonna want a good lens, thats the main factor, and light. a fast lens with a low f-stop is best. im shooting to with a canon xti and a tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens. i really need something like a 1.8 to shoot in my aquarium or upgrade the lights.

D300 is about as good as it gets for regular guys like you and me.

you have to remember though, it's the lens that makes the biggest difference and some will cost as much as the camera itself.

for example, I have the D90, about $1,000 for the body, and over $800 for a nice lens.

there's really no need to get anything more than the D300 from Nikon, or the 50D from Canon.

I started shooting with a D70s. I'd be still shooting with it if I didn't need more megapixels in my images. The reason I wanted more megapixels was to be able to sell photos. I lost a really good opportunity because a buyer couldn't make a decent professional poster out of some pics I had taken that he really liked and wanted.

For the beginner, most entry level dslrs are fine for amateur work.

Lenses is where you will spend most money, even if you only want to become better at it. When you see spreads in Sports Illustrated of guys playing pro sports, or in nature magazines where they put up pics of eagles in flight and stuff like that, know that for the most part those pics are taken with camera bodies ranging from 5K and up and lenses that often cost 2K and very often, especially for the long zoom pics, cost upwards of 10K.

Why so expensive? Most pro level equipment needs to be built so that it will not fail. Camera gear is so precision-tuned, the only way to ensure it lasts is to use the best materials to construct and hold them together with. Titanium is what the better camera body frames are made with.

An amateur can get away with stuff that is much cheaper, but don't kid yourself into thinking it's a cheap hobby. It isn't.

Oh and by the way, the best cameras would probably be hasselblads. But don't even look for them unless you have about 20K for one of their "cheap" bodies, lol.
