I've only had experience with mollies, but I'm very open to other options. Looking to set up a new breeder tank once I'm done moving, primarily to feed a needlefish and a bichir. If you think that another fish is better than either of the two primary choices, let me know what and why!

Mods - sorry if you feel the need to move this thread; I thought it was more of a general question than one having to do with breeding specifics.

How prolific are the mollies? I've only done guppies and it seemed they ate as many as they bore so I hardly got any feeders out of it.

Wait, do people really breed cons for feeders? That's something new to me. I used to feed crickets to my fish...if your fish will eat them they're great, you can gut-load 'em with whatever veggies (like carrots for color). Not sure if all fish will eat 'em though.

anyone else? at this point i'm leaning towards convicts only because i have been spending too much money keeping my mollies free of disease (ick, cloudy eye, body fungus, you name it.) i've heard they'd do better in brackish water, but i don't have the extra set up to do that. plus, i have dibs on a really pretty convict female.

ill go for the convicts because
1. survival rate of frys are wayyyyyyy high compared to livebearers and
2. Convicts are very hardy and doesnt tend to get sick easily.

Mollies have my vote. They seem to breed all the time and the fry get big pretty quickly.

If you decide on breeding convicts, make sure you use the younger ones as feeders. As convicts get older they begin to grow a spine out of their top fin that may injure your fish.

how old/large are they when the spine appears? i would probably feed them about 6 mo of age.

I am not 100% sure on the age that the spine becomes apparent. I'm assuming that your bichir and needlefish are at a much larger size, then at six months it should not be too much of a problem.

wat about mosquito fish just set up a rubbermaid container outside get a bunch of fish and just let them breed all summer and fall
