What's the best food for bass fry ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Probably a good quality pellet if you can get them to eat it,crushed to the appropriate size if need be.

There is a couple of routes you can go. You could keep going the pellet route (I recommend floating as they seem to take those better initially), eventually he will recognize it as food. He may take it and spit it out at first but eventually will accept it. The other options I have had luck with to start them with is freeze dried krill (If he is big enough), or blood worms. How big is your fry?

If they are really stubborn, you could start with live so they learn to associate what you drop in as food, and then shift to frozen/freeze dried and then pellets. But that tends to prolong and complicate the process. I would just continue small floating pellets and he should take it eventually.

Largemouth and Smallmouth bass just out of the nest can be tough to feed at first. Back in the days when I kept them...many years ago, before I was aware that it was actually illegal in my area...I was able to switch them from frozen brine and frozen blood worms to freeze-dried foods by dropping the frozen stuff into the output of a power filter, causing it to swirl around rapidly and randomly in the water. Once they get used to that, start using the food they like to get them excited and then quickly switch to the desired stuff (freeze-dried, pellet or what-have-you) and the odds are that they will continue to grab that. You might be able to get them actually eating pellets that way.

One idea that I used to use for wild game fish was to add in a platy or molly to the tank so they would get a sense of competition in the tank. Usually it didn't take too long for the wild fish to realize that what this strange looking fish is eating
is food that it itself could be eating.

You could try decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, I haven't used them yet, but I just got some to try with my dace. Fortunately I got the dace eating before they came, in so now they are just a treat, but I did put 4 new ones in yesterday, I'll l let you know how they like them.
