I just bought an FX5 and I plan to put biomax in the two bottom trays.
I've heard that the Fluval polishing pads aren't so good because they get clogged up easily and you have to replace them every 2 weeks.

What do you guys use as your mechanical filtration in an FX5? Can I use a sponge from an AC 110?

mine is completely full of pot scrubbers, keeps a VERY stocked tank of rays happy.

cheapest and IMO the best way to go!

I might have to try this:D
Ill just take out my Ceramic Rings and add them to my sump

i asked on here before about doing that and someone said that it wouldnt be a good idea, maybe i should of just gave it a try, glad its working for you.

yea they told me they dont work in canisters...:screwy:
but i heard they used to use somethin ver similar to them as water polishers in old ehiems. my lfs owner says exaclty like them just white

I've read the same thing -- that scrubbies are much more effective in a wet/dry system. In a canister, since it's a limited space, you get more surface area with biomax or eheim substratpro.

But back on topic, what's the best mechanical filter media to put in an FX5?

well i think the scrubbies are a good mech filtration...

Why add more mech media, doesn't the outer rings contain sponges for mech filtration?
