Whats the best pleco for a 40 gallon long?

Is it a planted tank? I personally never use fish for algae. I use Nerite snails. Cheap, effective, almost no bio load and can only breed in brackish conditions.

Nerites can be picky, though, and do far better if there's wood to chew on... which gets messy unto itself. Heavier green & more filamentous algae needs heavy-hitters, like pond & ramshorn snail if you can swing it. Plecos are a last-choice, IMO, but I'm also there right now as I've introduced gorgeous orange chromide cichlids that have cleaned out every blessed snail...
