this is my first time breeding i did a bunch of reading about it and wanted some other peoples opinion for the best setup for breeding convicts any little bit would help water temp, plants, rocks, caves, lighting, or am i just pitting to much thought into it???

thanx in advance...

o and i have a 37 gallon tank with a divider right down the middle with a parrot flower horn and a polypterus on the other side...

You're putting too much thought into it, I can't get mine to stop breeding. It will take a little while to your pairs to mate up but once they do they'll be reproducing every few weeks. If you want to encourage them then keep the temp around 80 and toss in a few good spots to lay eggs like flower pots. Large water changes can also encourage them to spawn.

these guys are very easy to breed once you get the right pair! it took mine about a month pair up and they just had their first batch last week. all i did was up the temp to between 80 and 82 degrees, did water changes of about 40% and more, and i gave them frozen blood worms as well as their reg food. as for plants if you want to go with live plants moss seem to do well with convicts, other plants dont do well cause cons like to rip up the gravel! but the plastic will do fine as well. as for caves and rocks the aqaurium caves you find at the petshops would be fine or you could use the flowerpots like inglorius said. i used an old small plastic betta tank and put a bunch of plants around it to make them feel secure. they were hidden but i could still see into it enough to be sure the fry and parents were ok. flat rocks are good, you could just lie them on the gravel like i did! my female, lady, just dug out the substrate from under them and made her own caves. good luck! hope this helps some!

I threw a Plastic Log cave, and a flat rock in the corner of a 38 tank I have under my 150. The 150 Overflows into the 38 into a filter sock, and a Mag-Drive 750, and an FX5 pump the water back up top. This tank is bare bottom.

I got surprised with babies a couple of days ago. Absolutely no effort at all. I've been feeding Hikari Gold, and Sinking Shrimp Pellets. I was also concerned about the FX5 intake so I moved it further away from the fry. But the fry were out and about today scavenging the bottom of the tank with dad and went right up to the FX5 intake and I didn't see a single one get taken.

At least your woman will participate. Mine acts repulsed at anything fish. She had a fit because it took over 20 mins to decide-on-and-purchase a new tank at my LFS. But it's perfectly normal to take 2 hours to put her face on. LOL Women, gotta love em :screwy:
