What's the best way to childproof a pond?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Iron grill grating with 4" holes or similar is the only real way to child proof a pond and still allow the wildlife in. A fence is a barrier but as soon as a football goes in they will find a way through or over a fence (unless of course it's the type you won't want to look at like a construction yard fence).

The safest way to drown proof a pond is to completely fill it with large round river rocks until you can't see the water. You will still be able to hear running water and wildlife including plants will benefit. Even 30cm of water can be dangerous.

When the kids are older, you can remove the rocks.

With my kids we just told them to be careful, and only let them near the ponds supervised. Also got the kids to stand in the big pond before it was filled so they understand how deep it is
