If the creek has no chemical pollution then a good scrub and boil for about 30 minutes should do fine .
Free rocks are good rocks..

I usually sit them in a bucket with aquarium salt for about an hour and then scrub em real good with scolding hot water.then let them soak again in aquarium salt with boiling water.I usually use a 5 gallon bucket for all this

do the same with driftwood. boil it. you may have to do this a couple of times or soak it in water for a couple days after you boil it to get the tannins out.the color is not toxic to the fish, it just turns youre water brown.

how long does the colorating stay in the water?

depends on type of wood and how long you boiled it. it may be 3 to 4 water changes. its hard to say for sure. seems every piece is different.
