i have the opportunity to get a nother 135 gal tank by itself, just the glass. 72x18x24. the guy says best offer. the tank leaks when half full but only needs some silicone he says. im going to see it tommorow and want to get it as cheap as possible. a 135 gal tank by itself new here is around $600 and have to be ordered in. so what should i offer him and what are some points i can bring up to get him to take a low price/ the add is 3 months old and looks like he's not a fishkeeper as he didnt know the size(135gal) he only knew the dimensions.....so??????

I would offer 135.00 and tell him the truth.. Used tank under 180 gallons usually go for 1.00-1.50 per gallon used without flaws such as leaks.. And that the needing of silicone is a little more complicated than that..

So you would still be giving him the fair used price for hobbiests.. Plus it is just the tank.

Let him know that resealing a tank of that size is not easy and takes a good amount of time and experience.

I just picked up a 125 today for 100.00 with a sump , pump, and skimmer... No flaws.. But 125.00 for just the tank I bought would have been fine with me.. I like to be fair to the seller to.. If they ask a price that is below what I think is a good deal... i usually pay it no questions asked.

If you have never resealed a tank you could be looking at a couple days of hard work. It gets pretty hot in those glass boxes :)

And there are lots of things you just don't know the first time... Even reading the process and folllowing it still takes a minute the first time.

I'm not going to offer him even a $100 for it...may be lower because of that leak you have to fix...just make sure if you buy it to fix it well that's a 135 gallon tank imagine the pressure that tank has with all those water it holds good luck.

id jump on it but its hard to get tanks hear. so any tank i could at $1 a gallon sweet deal

I'm in the process of resealing 2 tanks right now. These are my first attempts, so I'm being rather meticulous about detail. I've spent a bit over 2hrs removing the silicone from a 30x18x12 tank (I'm redoing the whole tank, rather than just a side). I've found out it's not an easy process, and I'm just 1/2 way done.

Take note of the location of the leak, as corners are gonna require a lot more work.

Not that it's a given, but I agree with:

so what would be the process in repairing a leaking tank? its probely around one of the side seams. im sure that i could do it with everyones help here. i want to give him the impression that its not worth alot, and resealing it is a hard task so that he sells it cheap.(i hope i dont sound like a sleeze)i first saw this add like 2 months ago and he still has it!!!.....im hoping to walk away with it for $60.... is that too low to hope for? it would look great side by side with my other 135gal. a 12 foot tank!!....sorta....

sorry but i forgot to mention.... i think this guy has been keeping it out side in his garage. im not too sure if he is or not. what are the negative impacts of keeping a tank outside if in fact that is what he has been doing?

Cracked silicon due to exposure to the sun? But jump on it, haha, set your goal at $80 but start the offer at $60, to see if you get lucky. :P If he's in no hurry to get rid of it, you're gonna have to offer more than $80. Gl though.

The best negotiating tool is the word 'no'. When you say it, mean it. As you are leaving, turn and ask him what he thinks it is worth. What ever the result, you can always call him several days later with a counter offer.

If you do get this tank, keep in mind who is going to have to fix it and who is going to have to pay for the repair. Your time is worth money. Also your fingers will be raw when you are done scraping the old silicone out.
