Just finished the plumbing and setup of my first sump on my newly aquired 135gallon Clariy Plus and the Sump Pumps are made by RIO. There is a 2500 and a HyperFlow 14HF. THey are not bad but I was wondering if I could completely quiet down the hum, coming from the sump...

I have the 30gallon sump sitting on a Towel, so I know that it's the pumps, being that they are both sitting on suction cups... Anyway, Just wanted to know what experienced sump owners have or have and got rid of and purchased and for what reasons?

Thanks!

I noticed the same thing with my 12HF and made a slight modification to the suction cup mount after realizing that its not a perfect fit. It runs a lot quieter now that the front cover is on as tight as possible, but there is still a noticeable hum. I am hoping that it might quiet down even more after it has been in use for a while and after I add a cover to the top of the sump.

I use Quiet One pumps. Not silent, but not loud. They do have a definite hum to them. I think most of it is the sound amplified by being under water.

I've actually found that big external pumps run even quieter.

Yes, this is with a 12hf and 14 hf. When I got them the impellers were siezed up inside the motor compartment. I had to drill a hole in the end of them, underneith the top cap through the base of the shaft seat and then push the motor out with a small nail... Worked great. Ordered new impellers and they almost seem off balance. They don't have the steel shaft with ceramic bushings though. They are all ceramic... I managed to get the 14HF moderately quiet but I can still hear a mild higher pitched tickity tickity noise. I notice a small black piece that is attaced to the outside of the impeller that seems like it would cause balnce issues. It's a manufactured piece so I left it there.... The 12hf I tried breaking the impeller out of the motor compartment and that caused some scratches on the interrior wall of the motor compartment but I don't think that is what's causing the vibrating. But the 12hf seems to make more noise than the 14hf for some reason... So I have the 14hf and a 2500 in there...

I have read that these "Quiet one" pumps produce very little noise...

Any suggestions on an external pump? That I woldn't have to spend a fortune on and that I could run with 3/4" returns? Thanks!
