Is chemical filtration needed/highly recommended, are there certain times you need it and other times you don't? I understand its supposed to help water parameters but no one really talks about it on here. whats the deal with it, is it important

From my understanding carbon is only needed to remove extra medications after treating for parasites etc. I think it's all marketing from the "companies". Good mechanical, biological filtration, not over stocking and water changes seems to be the trick.

Carbon is meant to remove impurities in the water, and, as already mentioned, to help remove medication. I would bet that the majority of people on MFK do not use chemical filtration. It is an unneccesary part of filtration because your water can be kept perfectly healthy without it.

thats what i figured, thanks guys, the filtration 101 sticky didnt explain chemical too well, it did a good job with everything else tho
