difference between pumpkinseed and green sunfish today with just a 10" net in the shore and caught a 5" sunfish not sure which type is it but it must be a green or pumpkinseed, it is VERY COLORFUL it has white stripes on its face like a green terror and its body has mixed colors of gold and green or something like that,

now my 4.5" bulky oscar is harrasing it along with my 4.5" Severum will the sunfish holds its own, the oscar just barely bites it, he most flares at it and nips it carefully the severum not really as long as it is not in front of his face he wouldnt attack him, he does though bite my oscar from time to time. my tank is 55 gallons at the time, will any type of sunfish outgrow it? also what are some tips to keep them i kept them before but forgot most of it... i heard they are easy hardy fish that live in lakes and ponds, but i need to name which type of sunfish is it as there is like 6+ types of it but most likely is a green, pumpkinseed, not a bluegill because it is much more colorful than a pale bluegill sunfish, my worry is will it hold its own?

Lol we cant ID a fish based on how "colorful" you think it is. Also, these are NATIVE fish, not cichlids. Post pics in the NATIVE forum if you want better help.

If you look in the Native fish media lounge you'll find plenty of pics you could also do a search over there. This isn't the right place for that, it's all good, just go there and you'll get the info you need.

I heard somewhere that sunfish make good dithers, not sure where

sunfish are definitely aggressive to hold their own against cichlids but you really need a bigger tank for all those fish, an oscar on its own needs a 75g tank you will probably need AT LEAST 90-100 to comfortable house all of them long term and thats with plenty of water changes

Pumpkin Seed catch them all the time ive caught some with nice size would probably fit nicely in the 55 alone though. As said though the native forum would be able to give you the full low down.

i posted on native section no1 has replied, is it true green sunfish got the black spots on their dorsals and anals? if so mine doesnt... and yea i know the oscar doesnt belong here at least wit all these fish i will sell it in the future or get a bigger tank if he stays below 10-11" before i start to work, im 15 right now... but i think he can live here til he is 8" for sure as my friend gave me his 8" red oscar for a week and he looked perfectly comfy in my 55 gallon tank and looked very happy in it but that oscar was more slender looking than mine soemhow, and it was also more peaceful and more lazy too didnt swim a lot

yeah he will be fine in there until he is 8in but with an O that doesnt give you much time (only a couple months) and large Os are really hard to rehome because they are so common a lot of people get them as cute little babies and then try to rehome them when they realize they have bitten off more than they can chew, your best bet would be to go light on your feedings until you start working and then keep your eyes out on craigslist for a good deal, you can usually find great deals on tanks from people trying to clear out space

oh and with adding wild fish to your established stock you might as well go ahead and treat for parasites because almost 100% of wild fish have them to some degree or another and could pass them on to your other fish that may not be able to handle them so well

Well, this is a green sunfish ~5". They are definitely aggressive enough to stay with an Oscar(maybe not the other way around) but a 55 is not sufficient space for them. They are just too aggressive for such a tight space. Unless your fish are only 1-3" you may have some problems real soon. And I would agree about the parasites, every native I ever kept came home with at least one type of parasite, if not more.

yes i am not feeding him too much and he has only grown 3" about 4-5 months ago since i bought it he was 1.5" wen i got it he is 4" at the moment ill be 16 soon though no worries about the oscar... now that greensunfish in the pic has bad quality mine doesnt look anything like that one it is much more colorful and is hiding in a corner from the oscar, i think i had a green one but was barely aggressive never lip locked just chased but if the fish fought back even a small firemouth he wud be scared of it, aand my green or bluegill sunfish i owned eosnt look anything like this one..

one more thing i think when i caught this sunfish he was breeding in the shore... or something was doing something there wit another fish... which was smaller in size... if it is a pumpkinseed sunfish what are pumpkinseed fish profiles?? r they even more aggressive? smaller? tips?
