How do you tell the difference between a sunfish, blugill and a hyrbrid bluegill? I dont know the differences.. I own a hybrid but want to know how to tell the differences if i buy more sun fish or blugills.

There are not that many differences between them, other than physical, Hybrids will grow faster than regular blue gills, Blue gills are more round in shape to say a green sunfish or a red ear, Then you have the smaller sunfishes (we'll call them dwarfs) like the banded and the mudsunfish. But most of the popular game fish sunfish will all be about the same, and at certian times these will naturally hybidize, namely man made inpoundments. They stock many types to attract fisherman resulting in some hybrids due to uneven populations of one kind or another. We have many lakes here in pa that are like this, due to the fact this state only has one natural lake in it. I hope this helps a little.

I think im gonna post a pic of it later. Its in a 10 gal with a channel cat =)

from the pic it looks like you have a red ear/ pumpkinseed cross, Its not a bluegill at all. Usually what they consider a hybrid blue gill is a bream, a cross between a redear sunfish(shellcracker) thats what they call them down south, and a blue gill. These make for better pond stocking because of the better growth rate. these usually are shaped like a blue gill with some stripping on the sides, witha more red belly and longer pectorial fins.

How do you ID that from that pic? There are different types of hybrids, not just one. You need a better pic to be able to ID that fish. Was it wild caught or purchased from a hatchery that produces known hybrids?

If you are really interested in these species, you should buy Peterson's "A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes : North America North of Mexico".

They very from state to state in what everyone calls them. In Minnesota "sunfish" is a generic term for all bluegill, pumpkin seed, green sunfish, and others. Hybrid up here is a natural cross between any of the native species which happens when stuff is floating around in the water. ;)

The guy I bought it from, he had a small fish store he sold Guppies, Minnows, Tadpoles, Channel Cats ( some of them where about 2-3ft long O_O), Rosy Reds, and Hybrid Bluegill and more fish. I'll take another pic sometime today. Hopefully it will be a better one.
