What's the difference

Is there two types of tigrinus catfish. I have noticed there are two different names. Can anyone tell me the difference.
Which two names are you referring to?

Brachyplatystoma tigrinum and medotontrus tigrinus. What's the difference. Or is it just another name for them. Spelling might not be right on point.

Those are the names that I thought you'd came across and I suspect that Brachyplatistoma tigrinum is probably the former name that was attached to the fish and Merodontotus tigrinus is a more recent change.

AFAIK, there is only one species. It's appearance variability has not led to any discoveries of different species.

The current valid name is Brachyplatystoma tigrinum. The Merodontus tigrinus is an outdated synonym.

But the tradition has been carried over and it's still commonly referred to as tigrinus (as opposed to tigrinum) catfish.

Its the opposite, actually. Merdontotus Tigrinus is the old name and Brachyplatistoma Tigrinus is the updated Latin, post revision of the genus.
