I am curently upgrading my filtration for my 135gal, from HOB filters to canister filters. my question is why are filters GPH the same but are rated for different size tanks? heres what i mean.......fluval 404 is 340gph and is for up to 100 gal tank. rena xp3 is 350gph and is for up to 175 gal tank and jebo 838 is 315gph and rated for up to 150gal tank. why is this so different? what kind of turn over rate should i have? and would i need two of these or just one? i would like to have the jebo838 as they cost the least. are they a good filter? the fish in the tank are 6 gold severums and 2 uaru and 7 oto cats.... all fish are under 3inches right now.

They are all pretty much basically the same. The rating for what size tank on the box is just whatever the manufacturer deems to put there.

some filters perform better, it isnt all about the GPH per-say. Some filters have less by pass then others which lets them handle bigger tank more efficiently so they get a better rating...

by bass is when water gets pumped through the filter but doesnt go through the filter media so all the waste is not removed.

They are not basically the same. As with any filter, the key things that dictate the amount of water they can filter are type of media, amount of bypass, and the flow rate. Eheims are some of the best canisters in all three areas, renas are really good, and fluvals are good to terrible depending on the model.

lets face it when it comes to Fluval anything below and FX5 is hit or miss, I think the FX5 is the only model that I havent tons of complaints about...

I would think media capacity plays a large role in determining what kind of tank/load size it is fit for as well. Does anyone know of any large comparison charts to this effect?

what about Jebo canister filters?...

I have a Jebo 828. It seems to flow less than the Rena XP3 I have hooked up to the same tank, but it cleaned up what the XP3 did not.
The priming system is absolutely horrible. The baskets are cheap. The media included is 1/4 of what is needed. The pads/foam are crap. The priming system is absolutely horrible (again because it really is $hit). It comes with a drip tray, likely because they know the tube inlets leak.

Aside from those minor problems above, it's wonderful.

You get what you pay for and this filter is the definition of that saying.

Decent for the money, but can't be compared to much (quality wise).

I've a Fluval 404 and I like it, but if I was filtering anything more than a 75G I'd go fx5 or something bigger...

I use quite a few Fluva 405's and have no problem at all with them.
Gph ratings along with the Tank size ratings are very deceptive. Personally I'd never concider using any ONE filter system on one of my aquariums. Use the provided information as a guide to compare the various filters rather than as their true capacity because it will ALWAYS vary.
