What's the dumbest advice you've ever been told about fish care?

Here's my favorites: (when I was starting out)

"You don't need to do water changes with big tanks because they have lots of water. Maybe once a year if it gets cloudy."

"Don't use dark gravel. Your fish will spook."

"You can use cotton balls for filters and save money."

"Iodine is a good disinfectant for ich."

"Catch small fish in a cup because nets snag their fins."

"Use hot compress for bacterial wounds or blisters."

"Mirror backgrounds make the tank look bigger."

"If you add too many plants your water will turn green."

"Crush vitamins in flakes to make them nutritious. Saves money."

:screwy:

All told to me by 'experts' at LFS. Needless to say I was skeptical of some of this stuff even as a kid. Amazing the bad/crazy information that floated around.

Best advise that still use in many LFS and never will go away:
"Fish only grow to your size tank so you don't need a big tank for fish like common Tiger Oscar"
"Bamboo Shark is bottom dweller fish so your 55G Saltwater tank is fine for it", this advise came from a most popular Saltwater Fish Store in Orange County, CA! LOL
