What's the dumbest advice you've ever been told about fish care?

Unfortunately I've heard all that has been stated but in the 70's and early 90's it was ignorance and millions of fish in the home aquarium trade suffered and died prematurely. Now in this day and time stupidity on us if we don't do research.

Unfortunately in 2019 millions of fish in the aquarium trade continue to suffer and die prematurely.

I was looking for a spiny eel for my 20 gallon, and aguy suggested me a bichir, one of the larger species.

The worst advice I was told was that a silver arowana shouldn’t be in a tank any bigger than 4ft otherwise they get to big

Catch small fish in a cup because nets snag their fins."
IME, if you're moving catfish, especially plecos, this is good advice. I use a net to chase them into a plastic cup, so their spines don't get tangled.

A trick I used with my Syno catfishes was to lower the water and slide a small plate underneath then lift them up.

My trick to catch synos or raphaels: remove all decor from the tank and put a cup or likewise object in the tank. 5 minutes later you'll have all the hidey catfish in the tank in it.
