First off, let's not flame anyone on MFK. Unless it's yourself, that's another story.
So, what's the dumbest aquarium-related thing anyone's ever done/said? Here's a conversation that I've had with a Petco employee. I'll admit, I tried to get a stupid response and I got more than I bargained for:
Me: "So what kind of care would you suggest for one of these senegal bichirs right here?"
Her: "Oh, they're super simple to care for! They're great for cycling tanks. That's where you get the salt ready for your tank. Mine lives in a little bowl right now, they do fine in any size tank. Mine eats dog food, so you can just feed them that. They look like they would eat flakes too. You don't need a filter or anything, mine always jumps out of the bowl so that means they get their oxygen from the air!" (I was amazed and stifled my laughter while I was in the store, so I continued)
Me: "Interesting, I might get one of them! So, this red tail catfish here, what kind of care do these guys need?"
Her: "Well, they get pretty big. I've seen one that was 8 feet long on TV once! They just sit on the bottom all day though, so you only need the biggest thing we have at the store here."
Me: "What's that tank size?"
Her: "Well, right now we have a 75 gallon in stock but normally the biggest thing we get in are 55 gallons. So that will work fine"
Me: "But didn't you say that they get 8 feet long? Even if they don't move, they wouldn't even physically fit in that tank"
Her: "Yeah, well you could fit one in there though. If they get too big, just try and fit it in diagonally" (I almost lost it at this point. Somehow I kept going though)
Me: "Alright, well one last question. This snowflake eel here, I heard it can live in freshwater. Is that true? And what do they eat and what size tank do they need?"
Her: "Oh, you don't want one of those. They always need to change from freshwater to saltwater, and they only eat live fish. We feed that one goldfish every day. And they get like 8 feet long, you need a big tank for that. You need at least 8 thousand gallons for one of those."
After that, I had to leave I was trying to hard not to laugh. The best part about this - she was the aquatics specialist! This was about 1 or 1-1/2 years ago, I don't even think the Petco is still there. Insane how a senegal bichir eats dog food, a red tail catfish can hit 8 feet, and a snowflake eel needs a bigger tank than a RTC.
So, what are your stories?
