I have a 180G tank I am very slowly putting together. What size sumps would be ideal for this? Don't say "the bigger the better" cause I've heard that 1000000 before.. I'm asking for a size I can work towards getting, Cheers for any info given! ((:

Oh I should also say I plan on keeping a couple rays, 2-3 probably. I doubt I'll have much else in there

I agree that a 75g sump would be good.

40 will be fine loaded with media. Plenty of room for water during power failure. I've run this on my old 210g packed with big fish no problems. I ran a 55g loaded with media on a 300g with a dozen monsters between 14-24" no problems either.

I run a 45 gallon tote as a sump on my 210 and it works very well. Unless you have a need for more space you don't need a gigantic sump.

I run a 75 on my 300 and it's more than enough.

Sump is just a place to put stuff.
It needs to be big enough to fit your stuff, and not overflow when the power goes off. And needs to be easily accessible for maintenance of equipment, a sump can even be on a different floor of the house.
When I add water from water changes, I like it to go to a sump first, instead of directly to the tank.
I have used 50 gal barrels, and tanks (50s, 75s, 40s even 20s).
I also like small refugiums to put between tank and sump to add nitrate reduction in tanks where plants can't used, that's where a smaller equipment sump comes into play.

A 75gal with bio tower

a 40 gal

a 20 gal refugium for plants and shrimp

I have a 180 & I used a 75-100 gallon like outdoor pond thing I got for free. I just loaded it with like 100 something pot scrubbers, Pond Matrix & a few large rocks. Also have a heater in there with a couple circulation pumps. Totally open no dividers or anything. Works great. I love that I went sump because its literally a totally open concept. You can do anything you want as long as its practical obviously Have fun with it :)
