I was wondering if there is a certain time of year,or water temo, that makes sunnies go dormant.I live in Massachusetts, right near Rhode Island,so that should give you guys a general idea how cold we get over here All responses well appreciated Happy Native Keeping
While sunfish are more active in warmer months many can be caught just about year round or at least until the water freezes over, even then they are often caught while ice fishing.
Sweet, thanx sandtiger,i cant wait to start up my sunnie tank,do you have any idea on the light requirements for cabomba?? Because where i get my sunnis, there is inumerable mats of Cabomba, and i'd kinda like to do a Biotope, but i do know that they thrive under full sunlight.Do you think i can get my sunnies on flake????Where i collect my sunnies they eat bread!!!! So most likley they'll take flake, which will be awesome,'cause my largie wont take anything that dosent move!!!!!!)
Can't wait to start raising my little Native Oscars.Thats what iv'e been reading in terms of their behaviour and even their looks.I agree, the sunfish are very overlooked and underapreciated, both as angling and keeping as pets goes.Happy Native Keeping

We have had both oscars and sunfish in the pond (and Pacu!) but I like the sunfish much better. They are something that not many people see (in the hobby or in the pond) but they are huge. I haven't done a water change in a while so I am not sure how big they are now but they can't hide behind the filter because they are so big. They eat rosies with the Channel Cats and are pretty peaceful. I am thinking about getting a fingerling for my tank because I think he would look great with some of my fish!
Trap about 15 1 inch sunnies, now were talkin'!!!!!!! The smaller the better for me.My pleasure is in growing them out,not getting em' as adults......To each his own
