I've been looking around my local fish stores for a female texas

but I only managed to find one that sells juveniles that are around 3-3.5 inches long

can I sex them at this size?

or do I have to buy a handful and raise them?

yeah look for a black marking on he dorsal/mohawk fin. Some females do show a that size.

I've read that some females do not have the black spot and some males do have the black spot

what are the chances that what I'd get would be male if they show the black spot?

I have a male Carpintis that some times shows a black spot in his dorsal. I use to believe that it was an indicator for female but
after growing some out and watching them pair I think body shape is better way to go. The females I notice are more torpedo
shaped with a flat gradual grade to the for head where the males have a taller for head and body and the for head is a sudden
abrupt incline.

I am by no means an expert on this, just what I have seen from my observations lately.

If you're looking at a tank of juvies you should be able to tell fairly easily. The males will be the biggest & you'll notice the body shape as mentioned.

so I choose

1. relatively smaller fish as males tend to be more dominant and bigger

2. choose a torpedo shaped one not the thicker, taller ones

3. a flatter head

right?
