I've searched the web, only thing I can find that brings up pictures if by calling it "holestone" and only 2 different places bring it up on google. I've planning a new tank setup and I want to use it but dont know where to buy it so knowing the name would hopefully help a bunch... thanks for any input!

heres pics of it:

I'm not sure but doesn't limestone disintegrate?

Just looked it up, it's called honeycomb limestone- or holey rock. Found mostly in Texas.

And no, it's not the chalky limestone. I have some in my tank, and no disintegration yet. It's rather hard.

Degrading, and leaching are typically the same thing, but one is on a much smaller scale.

holey rock leaches minerals in the water- but you must have acidic water for it to actually break down in your tank.

It does degrade in water, and makes the water more alkaline. That's why so many people use it in cichlid tanks and saltwater tanks.

Do you mean more alkaline, or more basic?

thanks so much for the info! So its beneficial as well as looks neat! I plan on using some pieces in a tank with black sand.

If the fish you keep like soft, acidic water, like a lot of south american fish, then it is not recommended. If you're keeping african cichlids, central american cichlids, or a lot of tank bred stuff, it should be fine.
