So. Cal.
what's the ph level for peacocks in the wild? and do they live in hard water or soft water? does either of these affect the fishes color or growth??????

I would imagine in the 6's.

It ranges from 6-7 I believe. I've read that much anyway..

It all depends on what river system and local they come from...some specimens live in blackwater tribs wich are 5.0 and below....others in the 5.8-6.0 range and some of the clear brazilian rivers are closer to 6.8.....so depending on where they come from determins the actual ph...there is no set stable ph that all cichla come from. ;) and yes ph will affect their coloration greatly.

In what way will it effect there color? higher or lower better for color?

at the proper ph they will boom with color(this depends on whether it is wild caught and from where, or if they are farm raised or florida peacocks-the proper ph will vary)...wrong ph...say too high or extreme lows qill cause them to be washed out and pale...keep in mind also that most cichla do not really color up untill past 6-7" and really color up around 15"+
