I know I've posted some other posts about my 35 gallon, but thats just bcause I have so many ideas running through my head that it's crazy!

Okay so I think I'm just going to get rid of all the fish in my tank, and I'm wondering what pike can fit in my 35 gallon tank? Probably just one if any but on the off chance that I can put more than one in it I'd like to know...

Thanks
Mike

Well Mike, if you DO put any pikes in there, they are gonna have to be dwarfs. Dwarf pikes are totally awesome though so I'd totally do it if you are serious about it. Crenicichla compressiceps, Crenicichla regani, Crenicichla noto. (hate spelling it), Crenicichla walleci...just to name a few. The first two are the most common, and only get up to 4" max. Anything larger than that is really pushing it.

In a tank that size, you could easily get away with a pair of them...which is the way pikes should be kept becuase they look awesome as pairs, just compliment each other. What you'll have to do is get at least 4 of them, and allow them to pair up on their own. Your chances of gettin a pair are much better this way. More is better, but it can get pricey. Once you get a pair, you'll have to get rid of the other ones and keep the pair. A female will have a spot in her dorsal and will get a pinkish belly.

You won't have to keep them the only ones in the tank either! ;). You could have tetras, as long as they are deeper bodied like serpae, broken line, full grown emps. and the like. Other dwarfs are possible as well. You'll just have to experiment.

Keep the tank relatively dim...not tooooo much light. Driftwood, caves, and live plants are a plus.

Can I add any other south american cichlids? (correct me if I'm wrong Pikes ARE SA Cichlids right?) Like Firemouth (probably not but it can't hurt to ask)? Or what about some live bearers so then they could produce something for them to chase around?

Thanks
Mike

Crenicichla ARE SA cichlids....Thorichthys (firemouth) are CA cichlids. Your tank isn't very large, Crenicichla are naturally aggressive and territorial...addin more cichlids in a tank that small could be problematic. There are a few dwarfs that would look nice...like Krobia sp. 'xingu orange spot'...pretty cool dwarf SA cichlid. Tetras you could try would be Serpae, BrokenLine, Emperor, Diamond....;). Mollies do best with a little bit of brackish water...so platys might be a better bet. Guppies are another option....but are really snack size and wouldn't last long.

try a redfin pickerel or esox americanus. same family, but wont grow as large, only 375mm

EH WRONG ANSWER!! Crenicichla = SA PIKE CICHLID...;)...esox are NA pike...noncichlid...;)

im talking about esox lucius, or the northern pike or plainly, the PIKE....the question he asked was "whats the pike for me?" . suggested he get a pickerel coz its smaller, rather than having a pike. not minding this is the pike cichlid forum

I know what you are talkin about, and thats kewl, but he posted this in the Pike Cichlid forum....so if he wants to find out about esox and other NA pike...there is another forum he could have posted in....AND a dwarf pike cichlid IS smaller than ANY pickerel...so it would be better suited for his tank. If he DOES want to do NA pike, then yes, pickerel would be a great idea...like chain or grass...;) ...red fin even..

yeah, my bad. twas meant to be a cold joke ;)

Okay I have ALMOST decided on dwarf pikes (cichlids). So what should I stock the tank with?

1x (maybe 2x) Crenicichla compressiceps
5x Albino Cory
1x Clown Pleco
1x BN Pleco
3x Swordtails (Platies if Swords are two big)
1x Krib (I like this krib a lot but if I can't keep it not a big deal)

Hows that? any suggesting/changes just tell me

Thanks
Mike

P.S.- Peanut if you think I'm asking too many questions just tell me to shut up... lol
