A sponge Filter?

Iam going to use a sponge filter rated for 20 gallons on a ten galon invert tank, the filtration would be powered by a air pump, tubing and efficent air stone.

Should I have the piping in the center of the sponge open up at the waters surface or under the water?
Confused.
Thankyou.

Run the airline down the tube it comes with. There is a spot where they connect at the base of the filter. The sponge is powered directly by the air pump so there is no need for an air stone. You will want the tube to be submergered by a few inches of water at least. Water must be drawn through the sponge, up the tube and out into the water column for the filter to work efficiently. If the tube breaches or reaches the surface, you have lost your circulation and the filter will be significantly less effective. Hope that helps ;)

Thanks Jk47 and gomezladams, I don't know why I was so stumped.
