from your experience, that's the quietest submersible pump you've had? does having a clamp and suction cups for your pump really help? thanks!!

does tube diameter affect flow upwards?
i'm thinking smaller diameter means a pump will have to work harder since it has to push X amount of water through a smaller hole, but also a bigger diameter means more water in the return tubes pushes back down on the pump. if you could help me that would be great!!

I've only used mag drives for submersible pumps and I've never really had any issues with noise. People usually say that Eheims are silent. I think noise only becomes a real an issue when dealing with high flow external pumps that use fans etc..

Hose clamp is always a good idea for safety. I've found that suction cups are useful to keep the pump oriented correctly but end up detaching from the glass reasonably frequently. As long as your sump is set up so that the pump intake won't end up out of the water if it detaches it probably isn't a big deal.

Yes tube diameter is important. I believe resistance and loss of head in your plumbing is proportional to the pipe radius squared, so using larger tubing will definitely help increase overall flow.

Most if not all submersible pumps are quiet. The down side is they give off heat directly to the water, only an issue if you live in Phoenix. I like "Quiet One" pumps. You can use them either submersed or external giving some flexibility. I keep a spare just for emergencies and I can use it on any of my systems.

As far as pipe size, just keep the same size plumbing through out your system. So if your pump has a 1" intake and return then use 1" plumbing everywhere.

thank you for your replies!

say i have a sedra ksp 5000 (500 gph max at 1 foot head, but will have about 3 foot head), and the out pump has an I.D. of .5", i should redo all the plumbing on the tank to be .5"? it's 1" now. i'm thinking of just getting a pump with a 1 inch out flow that has like 900 gph or more, but dont want to waste money if it's not necessary. it's a 125 gallon btw.

If you already have the plumbing done, at least give it a try. If it works your all set, if not, get the new pump at least you will have a back up when your pump fails. Eventually they all fail.

All my plumbing is 1". I just bought a ton of it so that's all I use. I'm currently running an old old 1/2 ID pump into the 1" line. It works. It's just not optimal but it's the second pump so I don't care and I had all the 1" pvc anyway. The picture below is my 125 "Goonch" set up. The 1/2 ID pump I'm talking about is the one in the front.

I have use a few different pumps and the Quiet One was probably the most silent submersible I have used. A close second would be the Mag Drives.

Eheim compacts are far from quiet. My New-jet 3000 on the other hand is very quiet and pushes about 3000 l/h at 0' head and like the ehem compact the flow is adjustable on the pump. This means more efficient control of flow compared to a valve on the return line to reduce flow. it is also half the price of the eheim compact 5000.
