Whats the smallest stingray and what tank size

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's been years since I kept rays, but as I recall, even the smallest will get 8-10 inches across. As far as tank size, it's more about footprint than volume. Better to have a long and wide tank than a tall one. There are a lot of highly experienced ray keepers here that can provide more specific info. Good luck!

I would check out / post the under stingray section for better results (link below for ease of navigation)

Mini marbles, scobina and hystrix(which has now been renamed) are the smallest. 180-240g minimum for one ray has been advised by other members. If bigger then always better. Ur filtration will need to be on point cause that small tank of water will get bad quick esp with other fish. Hope other ray keepers will chime in to help.

It can happen with these species but you always have to factor in
1) size of both fish involved
2) temperament of both fish involved

It isn’t always a cut and paste answer.

Some of the smaller rays could work in that size of tank but the down side of some of the smaller rays are they are less frequent in the hobby so are often more difficult to find, and much more expensive when you do find them. Also some of the smaller rays can be more sensitive to tank conditions.

This doesn’t mean it can’t be done, it’s just more of an investment of time and money to make it work.

Some more experienced keepers can chime in I’m still a noob.

A member here who is fairly local had a black diamond trio regularly breeding in a 7x4x2 tank. The largest female was roughly 3ft tip of body to tip of tail. 7x4, 8x4 is a good sized tank for a long time
