it's about 12 inches, depends on manufacturer. Ive had one at 12" and one at 12.5"

Yep. 13", I've owned many. The 48" long x 12" wide tanks are referred to as "50 gallons."

Yep, the biggest drawback of a 55 is the narrow with. A standard 75, with an 18' with, is a much better choice if you can swing one.

Also many commercial stands are 55/75, so no $ saved on the stand, and the floor footprint is the same so SPRING for 75 if buying.

but at least a 55 I can move on my own.. from car to house, up stairs, down stairs, arrange it on a stand. 75 takes at least 2 people.. or at least mine did. however, just an fyi: check it:
