i read in one of the threads here that theres a growth hormone that gets released into the water and affects fish growth and health. ive never heard of this. whats going on exactly?

The domiant fish will release pheramones that will retard the growth of other fish. frequent water changes help limit this but not compleatly, that's one of the factors why a fish can grow larger than others in a group and out compeat them for food and mates.

so does that mean if i have a single male fish, it will grow larger than if there were other fish to compete with? givin the fish has good genes and all.

A study has been conducted on goldfish re the growth hormones. Growth hormones are released in response to stress felt by the fish. As a result, it not only stunts the fish itself but others in the same area as the fish that released it. Growth spurts can be expected though if you try to remove the stress-related factors. Water changes help a lot.

Have you been watching Snakehead Terror? lol

ok just kidding....seriously though. yeah that can be a factor but it's not definite. I grew up 4 xiloaensis and 2 males grew totally equally up to around 9", thick and bulky. Of course, neither ever really dominated the other but they sure butted heads a lot. In a smaller tank, things might have been different but I raised them in a 125 gallon tank. take from that what you will. :)
